Description
Kiyomizudera temple perches on the wooded eastern hills of Kyoto in this print by Yuhan Ito, its famous wooden stage jutting outward over the steep slope as it has for centuries. Ito renders the scene with a soft atmospheric haze, blurring the boundary between the ancient structure and the forest behind it, so that architecture and nature seem to grow from the same source. The composition captures the sense of pilgrimage and elevation that makes Kiyomizudera one of Japan's most beloved landmarks.
