Description
A pagoda dissolves into morning mist in this atmospheric landscape by Yuhan Ito, its tiered silhouette barely distinguishable from the surrounding haze. The technique of rendering architecture through mist — reducing solid form to suggestion — was central to the atmospheric tradition that Ito worked within, allowing the woodblock print to achieve something close to the effect of ink wash painting. The pagoda's familiar shape requires only an outline to be legible, and Ito exploits this cultural familiarity to push the image toward abstraction.
