Bijin

A bijin-ga — "beautiful woman" print — represents Asada Benji's engagement with the human figure tradition alongside his landscape specialty. The shin-hanga movement revived this genre with a more naturalistic approach than its Edo-period predecessors, depicting women of the contemporary Showa era in modern clothing or traditional dress, their faces rendered with softer, more individualized features than the stylized conventions of ukiyo-e. Asada's bijin reflects this Showa approach to an ancient genre.
