河南八勝 第四
by Sakai Bunsei
Pavilion on the Cliff with Distant Sails is the fourth sheet of Bunsei's series Henan Hasshō (河南八勝, Eight Excellent Views of Henan), published c. 1830s and preserved in the Harvard Art Museums complete set. The composition is one of the more lyrical in the series: a mass of weathered cliffs in pale ink wash rises from a body of blue water at the right, crowned by a small open pavilion with a tiled roof and a pine bending against the wind, while at the left two boats with brown sails drift on the open water under a yellow upper sky. The upper register is filled with a Chinese-style poem in elegantly arranged columns of regular script, two red seal-form caption cartouches, and the printed series designation 河南八勝 第四 (Henan Eight Views, no. 4) in the upper-left corner. The artist's seal-form signature 文清/文星 (Bunsei) is impressed at the right. The pictorial logic of the sheet follows the long East Asian tradition, descending from Song-dynasty literati landscape, of pairing a high near vantage with a low distant vantage to generate compositional depth, and the printed inscription places the scene in conversation with the Eight Views genre's habit of evoking distance, wind, water, and quietude through compact visual and verbal cues. The sheet is among the more atmospherically successful images in Bunsei's Henan set.
