Description
Mountain Landscape with Fishing Village is the fifth sheet of Bunsei's series Henan Hasshō (河南八勝, Eight Excellent Views of Henan), c. 1830s, preserved in the Harvard Art Museums complete set. The composition is among the more expansive in the series: a panoramic mountain range modeled in pale gray ink wash sweeps from upper left to upper right, framing a deeply receding river valley whose central body of saturated blue water carries a small fishing village clustered along its banks. A miniature stone bridge spans the river at the center distance and tiny tree masses dot the foreground promontories, while at the right a row of low houses with tiled roofs steps down to the water. The upper register carries the printed series designation 河南八勝 (Henan Eight Views) and a Chinese-style poem in regular script. Bunsei's seal-form signature 文清/文星 (Bunsei) is impressed at the right. The wide-angle landscape format and the carefully graded ink modeling of the mountain massif show Bunsei working at his closest to the painted Bunjinga (literati) landscape tradition of his teacher Tani Bunchō, here translated into the more limited tonal range available to the color woodblock medium. The sheet documents the Edo printed landscape's growing technical ability, by the 1830s, to reproduce the wide-angle Chinese-style mountain panorama that had previously been the preserve of brush painting.
