Description
Mountainous Coastline with Bays and Fishing Boats is a mid-nineteenth-century color woodblock print by Sakai Bunsei, preserved at the British Museum (acquired 1967). The composition belongs to the same family of literati-inflected printed landscapes that Bunsei produced in and around the Henan Hasshō series of the 1830s: a coastal view in which a deeply indented mountainous shoreline opens to a body of water dotted with small fishing boats, with the foreground anchored by rocky promontories and the distant mountains modeled in pale gray ink wash. The print carries a Chinese-style poem in regular script and is signed and sealed by the artist. Bunsei was a pupil of the Bunjinga master Tani Bunchō (1763–1841), and his small surviving body of woodblock-printed landscape work translates the literati painting tradition his teacher commanded in ink and color on silk into the smaller medium of the printed sheet. The British Museum example represents one of the comparatively few Bunsei prints to enter a Western public collection outside the Carpenter collection of Japanese prints at Harvard, and documents the international circulation of Bunsei's literary landscape idiom in the late twentieth century. As with the Henan set, the picture is constructed around a single carefully observed natural motif framed by generous negative space and accompanied by inscription, addressing an audience of literate buyers interested in a printed analogue to Bunjinga landscape painting.
