River Landscape with Fishing Boat and Distant Mountains is a horizontally formatted color woodblock print by Sakai Bunsei in a wider album-leaf format than the Henan Hasshō set, c. 1830s–1840s, preserved in the Harvard Art Museums. The composition is a panoramic river view characteristic of Bunsei's adaptation of the Bunjinga (literati) landscape tradition to the printed medium: a wide body of saturated pale blue water occupies the center and lower foreground, carrying a single boat with a tall sail at the lower center, while a clutch of low islets with trees and a small bridge spans the middle distance and a range of receding gray mountains closes the composition at the right. Two text cartouches in the upper register contain a Chinese-style poem in regular script alongside two red caption seals. The artist's signature 文清/文星 (Bunsei) and a second red seal are impressed at the upper left margin. The print displays Bunsei's command of the literati landscape's structural habits — a low near vantage opening to deep distance, a single human-scale incident anchoring the picture, generous negative space carrying inscription and seals — and offers an example of his work outside the framework of the numbered Henan series. As with the Henan set the print pitches itself between the painted album leaf and the commercial nishiki-e, addressed to literate Edo buyers interested in a printed analogue to Bunjinga painting at a price below original brushwork.
