Description
Snow covers the grounds of Ginkakuji — the Silver Pavilion — in this 1979 winter print by Karhu, the famous Muromachi-era villa garden blanketed in white that softens its stone and raked sand into a unified, monochromatic landscape. Karhu's snow prints represent some of his most atmospheric work, using the white of the blank paper as an active element rather than a ground — snow is both color and light, both subject and compositional force. The Ginkakuji's austere Zen aesthetic suits Karhu's preference for restraint.
