The Koshihara district of Kyoto under snow is Karhu's subject in this 1974 print, the traditional machiya townhouses and narrow streets transformed by the white into something austere and quiet. Snow prints were among Karhu's most technically demanding works, requiring careful management of the white of the paper — left unprinted to represent snow's brightness — against the darker tones of wet timber, tile, and stone. The Koshihara neighborhood provided a residential Kyoto streetscape far from the tourist circuit.
