Description
"A Great Image of Buddha in Kamakura" depicts the Kotoku-in Daibutsu — the colossal bronze image of Amida Buddha that has sat in the open air at Kamakura since 1252, its original hall having been washed away by a tsunami in 1498. The Great Buddha of Kamakura is Japan's most iconic outdoor sacred image, its serene features and monumental scale commanding the surrounding hills and drawing pilgrims and visitors for over seven centuries. Okuyama renders this national treasure with the reverence and direct compositional clarity that characterized his approach to Japan's great sacred monuments.
