"Miyajima in the Morning" depicts the sacred island shrine of Itsukushima in Hiroshima Bay at dawn — the floating torii gate and the Itsukushima Shrine appearing to rise from the still water as morning light begins to reveal them. Miyajima (formally Itsukushima) is one of Japan's Three Views (Nihon sankei) — scenes considered the most beautiful in Japan — its combination of sacred Shinto architecture and marine setting giving it a mythological quality. The morning timing adds atmospheric mist and the particular quiet of dawn to this most photographed of Japanese landscapes.
