In this [oban](/glossary/oban) woodblock print, Igawa Sengai depicts a woman in the relaxed aftermath of bathing, a subject with a long history in Japanese [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga). The post-bath moment shows the figure at her most natural and unguarded: her hair may be loosely arranged rather than formally styled, her skin flushed from hot water, and her clothing a simple yukata or loosely wrapped robe rather than a fully assembled kimono ensemble. Japanese bathing culture centers on the deep soaking tub, or ofuro, and the ritual of cleaning the body before entering the hot water produces the flushed, softened appearance that artists found compelling. The woodblock printer would have used pink-toned [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradients on the skin to suggest warmth and moisture. The informal setting strips away the elaborate costume that normally defines bijin-ga subjects, revealing the figure beneath the layers of silk and pattern.
