Description
Kehi Shrine in Tsuruga, Fukui Prefecture — one of the most ancient Shinto shrines in Japan, its great torii among the three most celebrated in the country — is depicted in the atmospheric manner appropriate to a site of such historical and spiritual significance. The shrine's wooded setting on the Tsuruga Peninsula, surrounded by ancient trees and approached through a great wooden gateway, gave Ishiwata a subject of genuine grandeur. His treatment likely captures the quality of light through the old-growth trees and the dignified solemnity of the ancient shrine buildings.
