The Souvenirs of Travel series (First, Second, and Third Series, 1919–1922) represents Hasui's earliest major publishing relationship with Watanabe Shozaburo. Pre-earthquake impressions (before September 1923) are the rarest — the Kanto Earthquake destroyed Watanabe's workshop and most original blocks, making surviving early round-seal impressions exceptionally valuable at $2,500–$8,000. Post-earthquake editions were printed from recut blocks and trade at lower prices.
A flat-bottomed boat laden with cut stone — a common sight along the Boso Peninsula's coastal quarry operations — is depicted in this 1920 [oban](/glossary/oban) from the Souvenirs of Travel, First Series. The stone-laden barge (ishizumi fune) was a working vessel moving quarried rock to construction sites in Tokyo and Yokohama, and Hasui's composition likely shows the heavy-laden boat in the calm bay waters off Awa Province (the southern Boso Peninsula). The working maritime subject was an unusual choice in the debut travel series.
