Description
Kosentani, a village in a mountain valley, provided Hasui with the kind of rural bridge subject he returned to throughout his career. Arched or wooden plank bridges crossing swift mountain streams were compositional anchors in his travel prints, combining human infrastructure with the natural drama of cascading water and steep forested banks. This print likely shows the bridge as a horizontal mid-ground element, the stream rushing beneath it in a pattern of white foam and dark water rendered through careful baren-pressure gradations. The valley walls rise steeply on either side, their foliage—whether snow-laden, in fresh leaf, or turning—establishing the season. Hasui's handling of moving water in mountain gorges, achieved through a combination of carved line work and selective areas of bare washi, gives such scenes a sense of sound as well as sight.
