Description

This oban-format landscape print presents an autumnal scene rendered in Hasui's characteristic shin-hanga idiom, likely depicting a rural or semi-rural Japanese setting under the muted tones of the season. Hasui's autumn palette typically draws on warm ochres, burnt siennas, and deep crimsons set against cool atmospheric distances, achieved through careful gradation printing (bokashi) that produces smooth tonal transitions across sky and water. The Watanabe Shozaburo publishing house produced the majority of Hasui's prints using hand-carved cherry-wood blocks, with skilled carvers and printers working in close collaboration with the artist to translate his watercolor sketches into multi-block nishiki-e. Autumn was among Hasui's most frequently revisited subjects, offering opportunities to exploit the full tonal range of mineral and vegetable pigments available to shin-hanga printmakers. The season's transitional light—softer and lower than summer—lends itself to the quiet, contemplative mood that distinguishes Hasui's landscapes from more dramatic Meiji-era predecessors.
