Description

Lake Chuzenji (Chuzenji-ko) sits at approximately 1,269 meters elevation in the mountains above Nikko in Tochigi Prefecture, formed by lava flows from Mount Nantai that blocked the Daiya River. Its elevation ensures an early and vivid autumn foliage season, and the lake's still surface provides ideal reflective material for Hasui's compositional approach. This print likely positions the viewer at the lakeside looking across calm water toward Nantai's lower slopes, with autumn-colored deciduous trees lining the shore and possibly a small boat or dock providing scale and compositional anchor. Hasui's Chuzenji prints belong to a well-established tradition of depicting this scenic site—a meisho (famous place) associated with both natural beauty and the nearby Toshogu shrine complex at Nikko. The reflective lake surface allows Hasui to nearly double the color range of the composition by mirroring the foliage tones in the water, a device the artist exploited throughout his landscape work. Graduated sky printing (bokashi) would typically transition from a cool blue at the zenith to a warmer tone near the horizon.
