Description
The descriptive title suggests this print shows a bridge in a winter snow scene with a stone or paper lantern (tōrō) as a prominent compositional element — a combination that appears in several of Hasui's most tonally refined winter prints. The lantern, whether a garden stone lantern or a hanging paper lantern, provides warm emitted light against the cold blue-grey tonality of falling or fallen snow, a contrast Hasui exploited with great care through differential ink opacity. Snow resting on a curved bridge railing or on the lantern's cap demonstrates the printer's ability to leave washi paper almost bare while suggesting weight and silence. This subject type — a lit lantern in a snowy landscape — connects to the long tradition of winter meisho-e while pushing toward the more introspective atmospheric mood of shin-hanga.
