Description
The Asano River (浅野川) flows through the Higashi Chaya geisha district of Kanazawa, and Hasui documented this canal city during his provincial sketching travels. A bridge over the Asano would likely show the characteristic stone embankments and wooden buildings of the old city reflected in the calm, dark water, possibly with willow trees or seasonal foliage along the banks. Kanazawa's streetscapes appear in several of Hasui's prints, distinguished by their combination of water, traditional architecture, and the distinctive grey northern light of the Sea of Japan coast. The question mark in the current title acknowledges some uncertainty in identification, but the subject fits within the recognizable type of urban waterway prints Hasui produced for the Watanabe workshop across his career.
