Description
This print is part of Hasui's series documenting the Chubu Sangaku National Park, a protected alpine area in Nagano and Gifu prefectures. The composition likely features one of the major peaks of the Japanese Alps — such as the Hotaka massif or the Tateyama range — viewed from a vantage point that allows the peaks to dominate the picture plane. Hasui's alpine work contrasts with his coastal and urban prints in its emphasis on clear light and crisp contours rather than atmospheric softness. Color in mountain prints tends toward a restrained palette of slate grey, snow white, and deep sky blue, with selective use of warm tones in rock faces. The nishiki-e technique allows fine rendering of stratified rock surfaces through careful key-block line work.
