Description
This print presents Mount Fuji in the aftermath of a snowfall, with storm clouds retreating and the summit illuminated by post-storm light. Unlike compositions that subordinate Fuji to a coastal or town foreground, this design likely positions the mountain as the primary subject, viewed across a broad expanse of Suruga Bay or a Fuji-area plain. The contrast between the freshly whitened upper slopes and the darkened sky or water below creates the dramatic tonal range that drew Hasui to this subject multiple times. Bokashi gradations across the sky register the transition from storm grey to clearing light, a technically demanding passage requiring skilled printing. Hasui's treatment of Fuji avoids the symbolic flatness of earlier woodblock conventions, instead rendering the volcano with atmospheric specificity tied to a particular weather condition and time of day.
