by Kawase Hasui
The Souvenirs of Travel series (First, Second, and Third Series, 1919–1922) represents Hasui's earliest major publishing relationship with Watanabe Shozaburo. Pre-earthquake impressions (before September 1923) are the rarest — the Kanto Earthquake destroyed Watanabe's workshop and most original blocks, making surviving early round-seal impressions exceptionally valuable at $2,500–$8,000. Post-earthquake editions were printed from recut blocks and trade at lower prices.
Cloudy Day at Matsue in Izumo Province (kumoribi), published in 1924 as part of the Souvenirs of Travel, Third Series, depicts the castle city of Matsue under an overcast sky — the third of Hasui's trio of Matsue views in the series, each exploring a different atmospheric condition: moon (oborozuki), general view, and this cloudy day (kumoribi). The San'in coast is statistically Japan's cloudiest region, and the kumoribi — the soft, flat, diffused light of an overcast day — gave the Matsue cityscape a different quality than the reflective moonlit versions: the castle, canals, and Lake Shinji seen under a sky that both flattens and softens.
