Description

This print from Hasui's "Collection of Scenic Views of Japan, Eastern Japan Edition" depicts Zaimoku Island within Matsushima Bay, Miyagi Prefecture — one of Japan's three celebrated meisho (famous views). Zaimoku Island, whose name refers to timber, is among the hundreds of pine-crowned rocky islets scattered across the bay. Hasui likely composed the scene from the shoreline or water level, using gradated bokashi in the sky and sea to evoke the atmospheric light characteristic of the bay. The wind-shaped pines on the rocky outcrops would be rendered with the fine-line carving typical of Watanabe Shozaburo's shin-hanga workshop. The meisho-e tradition of depicting celebrated sites, carried from Hiroshige into the modern period, is central to this series, which systematically documented Japanese landscapes for a domestic and increasingly international audience.
