Description
This second edition of the Daikon Gashi riverbank subject revisits the Nihonbashi River produce wharf at dawn, likely representing a reprint or variant produced under Watanabe Shōzaburō's supervision. Comparison with the first edition would reveal differences in color tonality, block condition, or compositional cropping that accumulate across print runs. The scene retains its horizontal structure: the river's still surface acting as a mirror for the pale morning sky, moored transport boats forming a dark middle register, and the geometric profiles of riverside storehouses closing the background. Bokashi gradations in the sky register—typically achieved by applying diluted pigment to a dampened woodblock with a wide brush before pressing the washi—would be assessed against earlier impressions for freshness of tone. Such variant editions are common in Watanabe's production history and provide evidence for the commercial success of particular compositions. The Daikon Gashi site represents Hasui's interest in the older commercial quarters of Tokyo disappearing under modernization.
