Description
Early Summer Rain, Arakawa River, designed by Kawase Hasui in 1932, is held by the Art Institute of Chicago. The woodblock print depicts the Arakawa River in the lowlands northeast of Tokyo during a soft early-summer rain, with the river's surface broken by ripples and the embankment lined with houses and trees softened by mist. Kawase Hasui composes the scene with a long horizontal expanse of water in the foreground, a band of riverside dwellings in the middle distance, and a sky carefully graded from gray to pale blue. The artist's choice of an everyday riverside subject is characteristic of his approach within the shin-hanga, or new prints, movement, which favored quiet, atmospheric views over dramatic landmarks. The print was produced by publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, who had developed his shin-hanga program from the 1910s by commissioning works from designers like Kawase Hasui and Hashiguchi Goyo and overseeing skilled carvers and printers in his Tokyo workshop. The Arakawa subject reflects Hasui's longstanding interest in the rivers and outskirts of the Tokyo region, places where the rhythms of agricultural and small-town life persisted alongside the modern city. The early-summer rain of the title is rendered through delicate vertical hatching and the soft modulation of color, exploiting techniques the Watanabe Shozaburo workshop had refined to depict weather. Together they convey a contemplative, lyrical mood in keeping with the shin-hanga emphasis on landscape as a vehicle for sensitive observation rather than narrative event.
