Description
Light filtering through trees onto the surface of a lake is a subject that places particular demands on the woodblock medium, requiring subtle tonal modulation to suggest dappled or diffused illumination. Hasui's composition likely shows a tree canopy in summer or autumn creating a screen between the viewer and the water, with light breaking through in patches that animate the lake surface below. The interplay between the dark mass of vegetation and the luminous water beyond was a compositional device common in his landscape work. Multiple blocks would have been required to achieve the graduated transitions between deep shadow under the trees and the brighter, open lake beyond. Whether the scene is identifiable with a specific location — one of Japan's named lakes or a rural pond — remains a question of the title's framing.
