Description
This print presents Mount Fuji as seen across a harbor on Suruga Bay, a viewpoint that foregrounds maritime activity—traditional fishing vessels, mooring posts, or the gentle arc of a bay shoreline—against the mountain's familiar silhouette in the middle distance. Suruga Bay, and the harbor towns of Shimizu and Numazu in particular, provided Hasui with a setting where the industrial and traditional coexisted beneath Fuji's permanent presence. Compositionally, the horizontal expanse of water separating the viewer from the mountain creates the sense of distance and atmosphere that Hasui cultivated throughout his Fuji subjects. Bokashi gradations render the sky and water with characteristic subtlety, and the mountain's blue-grey slopes are distinguished from its snow cap through careful color separation. Printed on washi in the shin-hanga manner, the design belongs to Hasui's substantial body of Fuji-view work produced for both domestic and foreign collectors.
