Description
This print depicts Mount Fuji from Miho no Matsubara, the storied pine grove on Suruga Bay near Shimizu, one of Japan's three celebrated views and a site with poetic associations reaching back centuries. The composition likely places the viewer within or at the edge of the grove, where gnarled Japanese black pines frame the mountain rising across the bay. Hasui's meisho-e treatment of Miho draws on classical precedent while bringing his characteristic atmospheric qualities: the water's surface rendered in horizontal color planes, the mountain's cone emerging from graduated haze, and pine silhouettes in dark ink against a luminous sky. The site's Noh and poetry associations would have made it legible to Japanese viewers as a subject of cultural resonance beyond its scenic appeal. Printed in the shin-hanga manner by the Watanabe studio, the composition is part of Hasui's sustained documentation of meisho—famous places—that constitutes the core of his artistic legacy.
