Description
Susono, a town at the southeastern base of Mount Fuji in Shizuoka Prefecture, offers low, close views of the volcano's southern slope. In an evening composition, Hasui would position Fuji as a large, darkening mass against a sky moving through orange and violet registers, with bokashi transitions rendered through careful gradation on the washi paper. The foreground likely incorporates rice fields, rural structures, or the Kise River that flows through the district, providing horizontal counterpoint to Fuji's vertical mass. Evening light eliminates middle-tonal complexity, reducing the scene to silhouette and sky color—a format Hasui used to dramatic effect throughout his meisho-e landscapes. This print belongs to the tradition of depicting Fuji from its surrounding foothills rather than from a distance.
