From the Collection of Scenic Views of Japan series — Hasui's most extensive documented series, covering regional landscapes across the entire country. These prints document local sites that often saw little representation in earlier ukiyo-e, giving them documentary as well as artistic value. Snow scenes within this collection (like Saishoin Temple in the Snow, $3,000 at Artelino 2023) command significant premiums. Pre-war lifetime editions bearing the Watanabe copyright seal (A through G types, 1926–1944) are the most desirable.
The Hall of the Golden Hue at Chusonji temple in Hiraizumi, published in October 1935 as part of the Collection of Scenic Views of Japan, Eastern Japan Edition, depicts the Konjikido — the gilded mausoleum hall built in 1124 by the Fujiwara clan as a monument to their northern dynasty. The Konjikido is entirely sheathed in gold leaf, mother-of-pearl, and lacquer, and its enclosing protective structure creates an unusual subject for woodblock: an ornate interior monument rather than an open landscape. Hasui's 1935 composition translates the hall's extraordinary material richness into print, likely emphasizing the contrast between the glittering golden structure and its woodland surroundings.
