Description
This print depicts the Hamacho riverbank district along the Sumida River in Tokyo, a subject Hasui returned to across multiple compositions. The scene likely captures the embankment at dusk or evening, with moored boats resting against the bank and the glow of lanterns or electric lights reflecting across the water's surface. Hasui's treatment of urban river scenes in this period balances the residual character of Edo-era Tokyo with modern atmospheric effects. Graduated bokashi in the sky transitions from deep indigo overhead to softer tones near the horizon. The still water provides a mirror plane that doubles compositional elements and deepens the sense of quiet. Printed on washi in the oban format, the design was published as part of Hasui's extensive documentation of Tokyo's riverside quarters, many of which were substantially altered or destroyed in the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake and subsequent decades of development.
