Description

Hataori at Shiobara, published in 1946, depicts a locality of the Shiobara hot spring gorge in Tochigi Prefecture — possibly one of the secondary springs or neighborhoods within the extended Shiobara resort valley. The 1946 postwar date places this quiet spa-valley subject in the recovery period when domestic travel resumed and Hasui returned to familiar subjects. Shiobara had been one of his earliest locations (he depicted it in 1918), and this 1946 return represents a closing of a nearly thirty-year arc of engagement with the same mountain gorge in Tochigi.
