Description

Kansanomiya Shrine at Tazawa Lake, published in 1927 as part of the Souvenirs of Travel, Third Series, depicts a lakeside shrine on the shores of Tazawako — Japan's deepest lake, located in present-day Akita Prefecture. The shrine's torii gate standing directly in the shallows or on the forested shore would have created a composition similar in spirit to Miyajima's famous floating gate, with forest, water, and sacred architecture brought into intimate proximity. The oban format and bokashi sky characteristic of the Third Series lend the composition the atmospheric depth appropriate to one of the Tohoku's most celebrated natural settings.
