Description
A second composition of the Kiso River at Inuyama shows Hasui's characteristic practice of returning to productive sites to record seasonal or atmospheric variation. The Kiso River gorge south of Inuyama Castle offered different visual character depending on whether foliage was green, autumn-colored, or absent. This version may depict the site in a different season than its companions, with altered sky tone and treeline color indicating time of year. Hasui's Inuyama prints belong to his mid-career landscape series and were among the works that established his reputation for atmospheric precision. Publisher Watanabe Shozaburo's careful color supervision ensured that the subtle tonal progressions in sky and water met the high standard expected of shin-hanga publications.
