Kiyomizu Temple in Rain (Ame no Kiyomizudo), from the series "Souvenirs of Travel, Second Series (Tabi miyage dai nishu)"

by Kawase Hasui
Rain scenes are Hasui's second most desirable atmospheric category, carrying a 20–40% premium over comparable clear-weather subjects. Rainy Season, Shinagawa (1931) sold for $4,375 at Christie's Online (2020). The bokashi gradation technique used for rain effects demands superior impressions — well-preserved sky gradations add significantly to value, while faded examples lose much of their impact. Pre-earthquake impressions (before September 1923) are the rarest of all, as the Kanto Earthquake destroyed Watanabe's workshop and most early blocks.
Kiyomizu Temple in Rain (Ame no Kiyomizudo), from the Souvenirs of Travel, First Series published in 1921, depicts the Kiyomizudera in Kyoto — the hillside temple whose famous wooden veranda cantilevers over the forested hillside above the Higashiyama district — under rainfall, the rain darkening the veranda's ancient wood and misting the view of Kyoto below. Kiyomizudera in the rain has a particular atmosphere: the sound of falling water amplified by the open veranda, the city below softened by gray curtains of precipitation, the ancient temple structure receiving the rain with centuries-old equanimity. The First Series rain treatment of Kyoto's most famous temple established a compositional approach Hasui would refine across subsequent Kansai subjects.
