Description
Fudozaka is a hillside slope above Lake Yamanaka, the highest and easternmost of the Fuji Five Lakes at the base of Mount Fuji in Yamanashi Prefecture. Hasui made numerous designs featuring this region, exploiting the lake's unobstructed sightlines toward Fuji's summit. This print likely positions the viewer on the slope itself, looking down across tiled or thatched rooftops toward the lake surface with Fuji rising beyond. The title's directional specificity—naming both the lake and the named road—is typical of Hasui's meisho-e approach, grounding each composition in a precisely identified vantage point. Mount Fuji's silhouette, rendered with minimal line and broad areas of blue-grey or white pigment, contrasts with the warmer tones of the village and lakeside vegetation below. Seasonal cues—bare branches, autumn maples, or summer green—would determine the palette across different issues of this design. The publisher Watanabe Shozaburo's production standards ensured consistent registration across multiple color blocks.
