Description
This second treatment of the Mishima River offers a variant perspective on the spring-fed waterways of Mishima in Shizuoka Prefecture. The city's channels, which draw water from Fuji's underground aquifer, run through the historic town center and were frequently flanked by traditional architecture and seasonal vegetation. Hasui's revision of the subject may shift the compositional emphasis — from a wide river view to a narrower canal, from daylight to evening, or from summer green to autumn color. The clarity and coolness of the water, characteristic of Mishima's springs, would have been rendered through the translucent layering of blue and green blocks, a technical strength of the Watanabe workshop's master printers.
