Description
Oshiono, in the Fuji Five Lakes region, provided Hasui with a lowland vantage where fresh snowfall could be depicted blanketing the agricultural fields and village roofs that stretch toward Fuji's base. The "clearing after snowfall" motif is among the most technically demanding in woodblock printing: the printmaker must convey the particular quality of light that follows a storm—flat, diffuse, shadowless—while distinguishing freshly fallen snow from the mountain's permanent ice cap. This second state of the composition likely adjusts the sky tonality or the depth of shadow in the snow furrows. Hasui's known preference for depicting snow scenes in fading afternoon light means the palette probably runs toward pale violet or amber in the upper register, with the snow itself rendered as near-white paper with the faintest gray toning.
