Description
Viewed from the Banyu River, Mt. Fuji appears across a horizontal expanse of water that functions as a reflective foreground element. The river's surface, calm or rippled depending on season and wind, allowed Hasui to introduce color mirroring — the blue-grey of the sky and the pale cone of Fuji echoed in the water below. This compositional device, inherited from the meisho-e tradition of depicting famous places, creates a vertical axis linking sky, mountain, and reflection. The riverbank vegetation and any figures present establish scale and locate the viewer within the Suruga or Kai landscape surrounding the mountain.
