Description
The title 華源滝 (Kegon-taki) identifies this as Kegon Falls, the 97-meter waterfall at the outlet of Lake Chuzenji, considered one of Japan's three great cascades. Hasui renders the falls from a viewpoint that captures the sheer basalt cliff and the narrow main plunge. The white of the falling water is typically achieved by leaving the washi paper unpigmented in those areas, with the surrounding rock face built up through successive printings in deep blue-green and black. Mist and spray at the base soften the lower composition through pale bokashi gradation. The inclusion of the kanji title 華源滝 in this print's documentation indicates a calligraphic cartouche or inscription, a formal element connecting the composition to the literary tradition of meisho-e. Hasui produced this subject in multiple editions, and the kanji-titled version may represent a specific publication or presentation format.
