Description
One of at least three impressions catalogued under this title, this print depicts Mount Fuji rendered in a restrained, close-valued palette characteristic of Hasui's atmospheric landscape approach. The designation 'pastel' suggests a composition in which the volcano appears at dusk, dawn, or through haze, its snowcap dissolved into the surrounding sky rather than sharply silhouetted. Hasui relied on careful gradation of the sky block — a demanding application of bokashi requiring the printer to load multiple pigments across a single dampened block — to achieve these tonal transitions. Fuji subjects appear throughout his catalogue; this group of three related impressions offers material for studying how different printings affected the soft color relationships that define the design's mood.
