Phoenix Hall, Byodo Temple, Udi, from the series "Collection of Scenic Views of Japan II, Kansai Edition" (Nihon fukei shu II Kansai hen, Uji Byodoin Hoodo)
by Kawase Hasui

by Kawase Hasui
From the Collection of Scenic Views of Japan series — Hasui's most extensive documented series, covering regional landscapes across the entire country. These prints document local sites that often saw little representation in earlier ukiyo-e, giving them documentary as well as artistic value. Snow scenes within this collection (like Saishoin Temple in the Snow, $3,000 at Artelino 2023) command significant premiums. Pre-war lifetime editions bearing the Watanabe copyright seal (A through G types, 1926–1944) are the most desirable.
Phoenix Hall at Byodo Temple, Uji, from the Collection of Scenic Views of Japan II, Kansai Edition published in September 1933, depicts the Ho-o-do — the "Phoenix Hall" — of Byodoin temple in Uji, south of Kyoto, the most celebrated example of Heian-period Buddhist architecture in Japan, built in 1053 and depicted on the 10-yen coin. The hall's wings and tail structure, designed to evoke a phoenix alighting on the water, is set in a garden pond, its reflection doubling the composition's elegance. Hasui's composition likely captures the hall from across the Omotesando pond at a time of day that gives the water surface its characteristic reflective quality.
