Description
A second treatment of the Ujigawa subject within the Kankouchi Hyakusen series, this print likely presents the same location under a different season or time of day, demonstrating Hasui's practice of returning to significant meisho across changing atmospheric conditions. Uji's river scenery offered compositional variety — the wooded banks, the tea-plantation hills, and the historic Uji Bridge provided multiple vantage points. Variation between impressions in the same series often involved shifts in sky coloration, water tone, or the inclusion of seasonal foliage, achieved through substitution or overprinting of individual color blocks. Carvers working from Hasui's brush drawings would maintain the underlying structural composition while allowing colorists to differentiate the two treatments.
