From the Selection of Views of Japan series — a curated group of Hasui's most praised regional subjects. Series membership adds collector appeal beyond that of standalone compositions. Pre-war lifetime editions with the Watanabe copyright seal (A–D types) represent the most desirable impressions; atmospheric subjects (snow, rain, night) within this series command the highest prices. Pre-war lifetime editions bearing the Watanabe copyright seal (A through G types, 1926–1944) are the most desirable.
Setting Sun over Pines at Suzukawa Beach, from the Selection of Views of Japan published in 1940, depicts the pine-lined Suzukawa coast on the Suruga Bay shoreline — one of the many pine beaches along the Tokaido route where ancient stands of black pine fronted sandy shores with Fuji visible across the water. The setting sun (sekiyo) through pine branches is a classical Japanese landscape motif, the raking late-afternoon light turning the sky amber and silhouetting the pine trunks and branches against the colored water. The 1940 date places this in Hasui's mature phase when his Tokaido subjects achieved their most refined compositional execution.
