Description
Shiogama at Shiobara, dated to Autumn 1918, depicts the hot spring resort valley of Shiobara in Tochigi Prefecture — one of the most popular mountain spas north of Tokyo, set in a deep gorge carved by the Hoki River. The Shiogama area of Shiobara sits amid moss-covered basalt walls and autumn maple canopy, and Hasui's 1918 composition — made in the earliest phase of his career before the Souvenirs of Travel series began — captures the valley's characteristic enclosing atmosphere. As an autumn subject with this early date, the composition may show foliage color reflected in the gorge's stream.
