Description
Catalogued as stylistically similar to a known Hasui snow composition at Miyajima Shrine, this print likely depicts the torii gate or covered corridors of Itsukushima Shrine under snowfall or a fresh snow accumulation. Hasui's snow treatments of Miyajima, which he visited multiple times, rank among his more complex prints technically: snow falling or lying on vermillion lacquer architecture against a pale sky required careful color calibration to preserve the red's intensity without bleeding into adjacent tones. The 1930s date is estimated from style and composition. The "Similar to" qualifier signals the need for documentary confirmation; multiple publishers issued Hasui designs after the Watanabe shop fire of 1923 necessitated recarving many blocks.
