Description
This print is attributed on stylistic grounds to Hasui's treatments of Terajima, a district on the eastern bank of the Sumida River in the Mukojima area of Tokyo, under snow conditions. Hasui documented the Sumida River's surrounding neighborhoods extensively in the early 1920s, and snow scenes of Terajima and nearby Mukojima appear in the Tabi miyage series and related works. A Terajima snow composition would likely show a canal, earthen embankment, or bare-branched trees with dwellings under accumulating or freshly fallen snow, rendered in the cool blue-grey palette Hasui used for Tokyo winter subjects. The 1930s date range is approximate; the "Similar to" qualifier reflects uncertainty about formal title and publication record.
