The Byodoin at Uji, south of Kyoto, is a Heian-period Buddhist temple complex whose Phoenix Hall (Hōōdō), built in 1053, is one of the most photographed and illustrated historical structures in Japan, appearing on the ten-yen coin. Hasui's print from the Tabi miyage dainishu (Souvenirs of Travel, Second Series) depicts the hall reflected in the Aji pond that surrounds it, a compositional arrangement that doubles the architectural image and reinforces the structure's horizontal spread of wing corridors. The Phoenix Hall's distinctive silhouette — a central hall flanked by lower corridors terminating in pavilions — provided Hasui with a subject that combined architectural precision with the atmospheric potential of reflected water. The print likely renders the scene in still morning light, with muted grey-green trees flanking the vermillion-and-grey hall and its mirror image in the pond. The Uji subject anchors the second Tabi miyage series among Hasui's Kansai itinerary subjects.
