Description

Kanda Myojin, one of Edo's oldest guardian shrines and patron of the shitamachi districts east of the castle, stands in Chiyoda Ward with its prominent vermillion gate structures and stone approach. As part of the Twenty Views of Tokyo (Tokyo nijukei) series commissioned by Watanabe Shozaburo, this oban-format print documents the shrine's precincts within the rapidly modernizing capital of the early Taisho period. Hasui's approach to shrine subjects in this series emphasizes the architectural character of the sacred space—carved gate timbers, stone lanterns, ancient zelkova trees—set against glimpses of the surrounding city fabric. The interplay between the formal symmetry of shrine architecture and the irregularity of established trees was a recurring compositional concern in his Tokyo work. The print's palette would draw on the vermillion lacquerwork and the deep green of the shrine's mature tree canopy, with the sky treated through graduated wash to suggest overcast or late-afternoon light.
