Edition period is the primary value driver for Hasui prints. Pre-war lifetime editions with the Watanabe copyright seal (A through D types) consistently achieve 3–5× the price of posthumous reprints of the same design. Condition is the second key factor — unfaded colors, full margins, and absence of foxing or staining are essential. Subject matter (snow > rain > night > other) provides a further modifier within each edition tier.
The Wedded Rocks of Futamigaura at Ise in Mie Prefecture are two sea stacks joined by a sacred shimenawa rope, the smaller "female" rock and taller "male" rock representing Izanami and Izanagi, the creator deities of Japan. This 1936 print shows the rocks with their rope connection and the small torii gate on the larger rock, the Pacific Ocean visible behind. The Futamigaura was one of the most sacred coastal sites in Japan, adjacent to the Ise shrines.
